Healthy Living for African Christian Women – Spirituality, Lifestyle and Medicine

Introduction

Health is defined as physical, mental and emotional well-being and not just the absence of disease or infirmity. It is the total feeling of wellness in body and in mind. 3John 1:2 says “Beloved, I pray that you may get along well in every way and may enjoy good health just as your soul is prospering”. The peculiar economic challenges and emergence of infectious diseases makes healthy living quite a task. As Christian mothers we must make conscious effort to lead our Christian lives in ways most beneficial, not only to our health, but also to those of our husbands and children.

1 Healthy Lifestyle choices

The choices we make regarding everyday living, is a strong indicator of health. In 1Corinthians 6:19 the bible says “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you do not belong to yourselves? For you were bought and paid for; then give God the glory with your body”. It is therefore not only for our sakes that we should make healthy choices, but it is also a biblical obligation to live right.

Lifestyle choices are made in term of diet and exercise.

A. DIETARY CHOICES

Genesis 9:3 “every living, moving thing shall be yours for food; I have given it all to you like the vegetables.” There has been a lot of debate on what people should eat and what not to eat. Some will say don’t eat meat, some say don’t eat salt, but the most important thing is to understand that it is not about what to eat or what not to eat, but a matter of MODERATION.

The following are tips to help you make healthy choices as regards nutrition.

1. As regards breakfast:

– Take light meals in the morning

– Take at least 2 classes of food e.g. carbohydrate + (Vegetable, protein, fruits, etc) for example: yam and garden-egg sauce

2. As regards cholesterol and low density lipids (LDL)

– Just before you buy your next vegetable oil, make sure you check for the sign, – “low cholesterol” or “Zero cholesterol”

– Never over-eat EGGS, in our society eating eggs may be perceived wrongly as an indication of wealth. Eggs are good but we should limit it to at most 1 per day or 3 eggs in a week

– Reduce consumption of fried meals, and if you must fry use as less oil as possible.

3. Avoid overcooking your vegetables – a lot of micronutrients cannot tolerate the heat.

4. Salt, Sugar and Honey – Like earlier noted, moderation is the important thing.

As We advance in age it becomes beneficial to use salt in moderation, also certain food

sweeteners are better used with caution.

For those minding their blood sugar e.g. Diabetic women, it is important that you are mindful of refined sugar, however it is very important that we know that most of our staple meals are loaded with sugar. Food like Pounded Yam, cassava, etc so, what then are we to eat? if all these meals are sugar ladden. The answer is simple – ‘MODERATION” we tend to serve our cassava or pounded yam in very generous quantities, it is advised that we change that, serve just a handful of your staple meal, with generous amount of vegetables, crayfish, fish, meat etc This will supply enough carbohydrate with other nutrients without unnecessarily increasing your sugar level.

Honey is good; you could try it but remember everything must be in moderation.

5. Fruits Fruits Fruits

We are blessed with varieties of fruits; there is always a fruit in season. It will be most beneficial if you can take a fruit with every meal, yes!every meal. And I don’t mean bottled over-processed fruit juices, take only fresh fruits they are cheaper and full of benefits.

B. EXERCISES

As we age strenuous activities are best avoided but moderate exercises have benefits,

Short distances can be walked when it is not too sunny.

2. Personal/ Environmental Hygiene

The importance of hygiene is well understood and need no emphasis, proper grooming and cleanliness gives you a feeling of freshness and goodness.

Clean people don’t fall sick often.

Environmental hygiene is also a big issue, at times because of our busy schedules, the home is left untidy, making our homes a breeding site for rats and insects.

Rats, cockroaches etc find it too easy to pass diseases to us and our children

If you can’t clean up the home every day, find at least 2 times in a week to clean up. Get rid of stagnant water and nearby bushes to rid your home of mosquitoes.

Do not be careless about the source of drinking water for the family, as much as possible never patronize food vendors, COOK FOR YOUR FAMILY.

3. Use of Health Care Facilities

While Faith is important to us as Christians we should not fall into the class of misguided brethrens who perceive the use of health facilities as lack of faith, remember that Saint Luke was a doctor.

A. Regular check up

– Regularly check your blood pressure, it saves life.

– Visit your doctor for check up at worst once a year

B. Important medical tests for women: prevention is better than cure!

– Breast examination: breast cancer can be detected early and better treated.

When you bathe feel your breast for lumps, abnormal color or discharge. Stand before a mirror and compare the two breasts for any difference. If you notice anything abnormal see your doctor!

– PAPS test or Papanicolau smear test: this is done to screen for cervical

-cancer, another disease that ravage our female population. It is a life saver and we are encouraged to go for the test.

C. ANTENATAL CARE

When pregnant visit the maternity as soon as possible

D. FAMILY PLANNING SERVICES – the present economic conditions make family planning a wise decision. You will be surprised when you visit any family planning centre, at the vast methods available, you will be informed and are likely to find one suitable for you. Remember it is better to have children that you can cater for, than having a lot that you cannot care for. Family planning help plan the size of your household and also give you rest of mind and an opportunity to have a blissful and enjoyable marriage.

4. Stress Management

Matthew 6:25-34 “I tell you therefore, do not worry about your living-what you are to eat or drink, or about your body, what you are to wear. Is not the life more important than its nourishment and the body than its clothing?…

…34 Do not worry therefore, in view of tomorrow for tomorrow will have its own anxieties. Each day’s peculiar troubles are sufficient for it.”

One major benefit that faith affords us as Christians is that we could be free of worry, if we truly believe that our God is sufficient. When we put ourselves under needless stress, we make ourselves liable of high blood pressure and mental illness. Proverbs 14:30 says “A relaxed mind makes for physical health; but passion is rottenness to the bones”.

5. Spirituality

I strongly believe that there is a strong link between spirituality and health.

Jeremiah 8:22 “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician? Why, then, has the health of the daughter of My people not been restored?” it is clear that no drug can substitute the peace of mind and health that a perfect relationship with God gives. The bible says (ASV 2 Chronicles 7:14 ) if my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. The secret of divine health is in His promises to his children, the book of Amos says “can two work together except they agree” I encourage you all to trust God fully and He will renew your strengths.

6. Menopause

This is a period in a woman’s life at which menses diminishes and stops, usually between the ages of 45 and 50. Women often experience some discomfort which may vary on individual basis.

Hot flashes or hot flushes range from a passing feeling of warmth in the face and upper body to extreme sweating and visible redness of the skin.

As estrogen level drops in the blood, the vaginal walls become dry making coitus very painful and sometimes undesirable. Decline in sexual interest during menopause may also be psychological.

Psychological symptoms may include depression, mood swings, weepiness, and other emotional flare-ups, as well as memory lapses…Stressful life events that may contribute to the emotional symptoms at the time of menopause include children leaving home and general mid-life crises.

When the symptoms are unbearable you should visit your doctor. Treatment available is known as (HRT) Hormone replacement therapy, but the benefit must be weighed against the risks,which includes – increased risk of breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots.But in most cases, women’s personal perception of menopause may also affect symptoms, they are often tolerable when we have the right mindset.

Other ways of reducing negative effects of menopause include eating a healthy diet, taking vitamin supplements, stop smoking, reduce caffeine and alcohol, reducing sugar and salt intake. Exercise helps to alleviate menopausal symptoms

7. “Jedi-Jedi

This is a term among the Yorubas of West Africa, used to loosely refer to a number of often unrelated symptoms, and generally judged to be due to consumption of sugar or sweet things. I must say clearly that this is just one of the numerous health misconceptions and misinformation in our society.

These symptoms like backache, passage of loose stool, pile and hemorrhoids etc are most likely not related talk-less of resulting from consumption of sweet things or sugar.

If you feel unwell, please visit your doctor. Stop engaging in unwise use of herbal concoction for a disease that does not exist. Herbal concoctions are very dangerous. They can destroy very vital organs, we see a lot of liver cancers in our hospitals and even among women who don’t drink alcohol and the commonest cause that come to our mind is herbal concoction. The bible says “My people Perish for lack of knowledge

Conclusion

Jeremiah 30:17 says “For I will restore health to you, and I will heal your wounds, says the Lord, because they have called you an outcast, “It is Zion, for whom no one cares!”

Jeremiah 33:6 says “Look, I will bring to her restoration and health; and I will heal them and reveal to them an abundance of peace and prosperity. It is my prayer that as we continue to trust God, He will continue to grant unto us good health.

Magic of

Jean Kerr, the American author who has penned several humorous works has said in her famous books, The Snake Has All the Lines, that “I’m tired of all this nonsense about beauty being only skin-deep. That’s deep enough. What do you want – an adorable pancreas?” Humorous enough, but there is something true in her words as well. When you meet someone for the first time or enter a place, nobody really knows or cares about who you are and how good hearted you are. What people notice is how you look and how you carry about yourself. And to make that ‘first and best impression’ you need good looks that you can easily find through .

That time is past when people wanted to look good through those artificially made beauty products that contain a lot of chemicals and toxins that could make you look beautiful for some time but can harm your skin in the long run. With the coming of the World Wide Web and the popularity of the celebrities and models who use organic products, both men and women are realizing the importance and need of made with materials that the Mother Nature has benevolently provided us.

Today we find most of the items that we use in our daily life made with natural products. Soaps, shampoos, face scrubs, conditioners, toners, moisturisers, anti-ageing creams, make-up items like lipstick, lip gloss, mascara, eye shadows, eye liners – there is simply no end to the items that you would find under the category of natural or organic products. They have changed the destiny of several models and movie stars and have therefore become an attraction for people all over the world. The cosmetic industry today makes a huge income today out of these beauty products made of organic materials.

Often people think that since these items are natural they can use it without a second though, which is not actually true. It is important that you consult with a dermatologist before you start using these products. You need to be aware of your skin type, texture and complexion before you buy any of these. Once you get to know the details of the products from a qualified person, you could go ahead and purchase them. Luckily, this is not very difficult as there are so many brands of natural or organic beauty products in the market today and each of them have specially made products for each skin types.

are available today for both men and women and for people of all ages. They are of the finest quality and ensure that your skin would have no harm due to using them. It is in fact never too late to start using them and once you start on them just watch how heads are turned at you and check the added glow on your face in the mirror.

Organic and or – How Europe Manages the Beauty Industry

Before digging into how Europe manages the ingredients used to manufacture cosmetic products, it becomes necessary to understand why this is so important. Personal care products, otherwise known as beauty products or cosmetic products, are known to contain over 10,500 chemical ingredients. Many of these ingredients are toxic in nature. Toxins are poisons and when used over long periods of time, can cause serious damage to one’s health. Women use an average of over 5 pounds of lotions and creams annually. The skin is the largest organ of the body and is very porous, allowing over 70% of what is applied to the skin to seep into our bodies and into our bloodstream. Through clinical studies, it has been proven that the very same toxins found in a mother’s blood have been found in the umbilical cord of the fetus. Many of these toxic (poison) ingredients are carcinogenic and can be linked to cancer as well as respiratory problems in infants, birth defects, liver and kidney disease, etc.

Perhaps now it is clear as to why it is so important to know what is being done around the world to monitor what goes into the manufacture of cosmetic products and why it should be so very important for consumers to use only certified organic and/or .

Europe, Asia, and Oceania have taken major steps in controlling the ingredients used in beauty products. In this article the focus will be on Europe, while future articles will tackle how other parts of the world address this issue. Having said that, one might ask what about the US? Unfortunately, with the cosmetic business being such a large (50 billion) and extremely profitable business, the US cosmetic companies employ lobbyists in Washington to prevent changes in the laws regulating the industry. Shocking as it might seem, the Cosmetic Industry is self-regulated. It can determine what it wants to bring to market without any pre-testing by any government or private agencies.

Currently Europe has one Government authority that controls the ingredients of beauty products, the European Union (EU). However, there are private institutions operating in five countries that provide independent laboratory testing to the many cosmetic companies operating throughout Europe. These independent organizations use the authority of the EU to manage the process, but in some cases, go beyond the regulations required by the EU to determine and qualify products as certified organic and/or . These organizations are:

-BDIH operating out of Germany;
-ECOCERT & COSMEBIO from France;
-SOIL ASSOCIATION from the UK;
-ICEA from Italy;
-BIOFORUM from Belgium

These six organizations combined also make up what is known as the COSMOS-standard. The COSMOS-standard has not yet achieved legal status, but that will be delved into later in this article. At this juncture, let’s look at how the EU manages this process.

What is the European Union? What are its aims and results? How does it work? In summary, the answers to these questions are:

-27 democratic countries participate in the EU economically and politically;
-498 million citizens in these 27 countries look to the EU for safe, consumable products, including beauty products;
-It’s results in the beauty category provide for not just safer products, but a greener environment as well;
-It works because each country sets up bodies to adopt and manage the EU’s legislation.

The COSMOS-standard represents the European cosmetic organic standards working group. It is made up of the previously mentioned organizations. It is expected to be legalized by April, 2010 by the pronouncement of the Belgian Royal Decree. Excerpts of the main objectives of the COSMOS- standards and taken directly from their final document dated January, 2010, can be summed up as follows:

“Establishing a ‘sustainable development’ that would reconcile economic progress, social
responsibility and maintain the natural balance of the planet is a project in which the cosmetics
sector is willing to be fully involved… the organic and natural cosmetics sector clearly shows its ambition to go further in setting a new standard for organic and natural cosmetics.”

The following represents a summary of a set of simple rules that will be used to manage the organic and natural beauty industry. The main focus is on prevention and safety in all segments of the manufacturing process, that is, from raw materials to market ready final products.

The rules will focus on human health through:

-Organic agriculture and natural resources always with respect for the environment;
-A manufacturing process that is environmentally clean while, at the same time, utilizing and expanding a more green philosophy that ultimately will create a higher standard for organic and .

The six organizations making up the COSMOS-standard, namely BDIH, ECOCERT & COSMEBIO, SOIL ASSOCIATION, ICEA, and BIOFORUM, each have their own set of standards for certifying organic and/or . It would take a book to delineate each agencies processes. Suffice it to say that Europe has taken a lead position on this subject through the EU and continues to improve its status by moving forward with the COSMOS-standard. One of the results of the EU’s legislation is that they have already banned over 1100 chemical ingredients used in the manufacture of beauty products, while the US has banned a mere 10.

The US, with its lack of leadership in this industry, has left the consumer vulnerable to the poisons we already know cause harm to pregnant mothers, their babies, and to the millions of consumers that have used these toxins for decades. Over time, with many countries around the world coming together to prohibit these toxic ingredients from being used in beauty products, hopefully the US will change current legislation and demand pre-testing of beauty products before they are released to the public. Further, hopefully the US will also permit independent agencies to test products to qualify them to be labeled as certified organic and/or . In the meantime, when shopping for certified products, simply look for the logos of the aforementioned companies out of Europe. In doing so, you will be assured of using safe, non-toxic beauty products.

Healthcare in Spain

Whenever we think of healthcare in a foreign land, we immediately think, “will it be expensive and of the same quality as what we’re used to?” In fact, the quality of healthcare in Spain is excellent and many doctors and nurses speak English.

The health service is run along a two-tier system similar to that in the UK. The first tier is the National Health Service and the second is the private health care sector, which is covered by health insurance. Whether you are a native of Spain or a British citizen, if you are making social security contributions then you immediately qualify for the National Health Service. Otherwise, it is best to have some kind of private health insurance. We have personally experienced both sides of the Spanish healthcare system.

Private Health Care

When we first moved to Spain, we had very little experience of the lifestyle and that included provision for healthcare. As we were both reasonably healthy and because our knowledge of the language was still limited, we were somewhat scared of approaching social security offices and medical centres to gain more information, putting it off for another day.

However, with the rise in older men developing problems with their prostrate and my awareness of prostrate cancer, I decided I needed to see a doctor for a check up. Not being eligible for the Spanish health service at the time meant I had to go private. I had this dreaded feeling “This is going to cost a fortune”. Not necessarily so.

The couple that we rented our villa from in Mojacar recommended an English speaking lady doctor in Garrucha and we found to our surprise her fee was only 40 euros per consultation. On my first visit, all my details were entered into the computer and then a comprehensive examination was done including arrangements for a blood test.

Everything was extremely thorough and the staff was very helpful wanting to get a full picture of my current state of health. I was given a letter indicating what blood tests were needed and directions to a nearby blood analysis clinic. At the clinic I was seen straight away and the necessary blood sample was taken. What was most impressive was that I was called back the very same day for my results. Back in England I would have had to have waited ten days. Even better, when I phoned the doctor an appointment was made for the next day.

The blood test results came to a cost of 80 euros, but they had tested for virtually everything. At my second consultation I was told that I would need to see a specialist in Almeria and an appointment was made for 3 days time, again very impressive and quick.

At this point I felt somewhat amazed that in less than 24 hours, I had seen a doctor, been examined, had a comprehensive blood test, seen the doctor again been reassured that I have nothing major wrong with me and an appointment made to see a specialist in a couple of days all for 120 euros. Fantastic.

When I saw the specialist in Almeria, Dr Francisco Gomez Berjon, he was most charming, spoke perfect English and was completely at ease with me. Once again I was given a thorough examination and a course of medication prescribed, a further appointment was made for six months, and his fee, only 80 euros. I now see Dr Francisco twice a year for a check up.

On the flip side of this, my wife Carol and I also had the experience of the Spanish National Health Service.

Spain National Health Service

If you have ever visited Spain you will know that pavements either don’t exist, which means you walk in the road, or are uneven and have a kerb that is about 18 inches high (how disabled people in wheelchairs get by I do not know). You will also notice that the local Spaniards always walk in the road, apparently fearless of being hit by a passing vehicle. They obviously would rather face the car than risk walking on the pavement.

Anyway, to begin our story, one Sunday morning, my wife was on her way back from the newsagent, when she tripped and fell off the pavement. Ouch! We later found out she had broken her little finger and fractured her wrist.

At the time we had just started our estate agency business and as such we had to make social security contributions which meant we qualified for free medical care. If you do not have private health insurance, you should join the Social Security system.

Once you take any job in Spain your employer is obliged to process all the paperwork for you, pay part of your contributions and deduct the other part from your salary. If you are self-employed you will have to go to the local Social Security office and fill in all the paper-work yourself. Unless your knowledge of the local language is very good, then it is probably advisable to get a gestor (official agent – a bit like a lawyer for menial bureaucracy) to do this for you. Beware of using a British accountant who doesn’t speak Spanish fluently – you may find that you have not been registered correctly.

We needed to find a hospital quickly but not ever needing emergency medical treatment in Spain we hadn’t a clue where the nearest hospital was. We found a place near the beach with a red cross painted on the outside of the building but were then advised they only take private fee paying patients. Fortunately, they directed us to a health centre on the other side of town.

As opposed to my wonderful private health care experience with English speaking staff, at this health centre, the receptionist only spoke Spanish and we had some trouble understanding each other. Fortunately for us, a doctor was passing by and kindly offered assistance. However, to our dismay we were told we had come to the wrong hospital. In fact, you are supposed to attend the hospital that is registered for the district where you live. We were then given more directions and this time found the right health centre.

We were seen straight away, only to be told that the diagnosis of a suspected broken finger needed an X-ray, but that the centre did not have an X-ray facility and we were told to go to the main general hospital in Lorca, which was 35 km away. All this time my wife behaved remarkably well even though the pain was excruciating.

As with most things in Spain everything is located in the town centre and parking was difficult. We walked to the A & E department and just like the UK – it was very busy. After explaining our problem to the reception desk, we filled in a form, and proceeded to wait. Of course, we assumed we were going to be here for hours. Actually things were very fast and after a very short wait, Carol was examined and whisked off to X-ray. After the x-ray, we waited only another ten minutes before a doctor confirmed the broken finger and fractured wrist. Carol received the necessary treatment and an appointment was made to visit the hospital in another seven days.

In all fairness if we had been better prepared it wouldn’t have turned into such a drama. The lesson to be learnt from this experience was that accidents do happen and you do need to be prepared. When you arrive at your final destination, register immediately with your local health centre, find the location of your local hospital, drive there and have a look around. Also, make a note of useful telephone numbers that you are likely to need in case of emergency and keep them close by a telephone. You never know when you may need them.

We have put together a list of various forms and information that you may find helpful.

Form E121 –
If you are a pensioner from the UK, 65 for men, 60 for women, and intend to live in Spain permanently then you can get free medical care and medications under a reciprocal agreement between EU governments; you should obtain form E121 from the DSS in the UK prior to your departure. You may need a separate form for each member of your family. This form should be handed in to the Seguridad Social (Social Security) in Spain. It provides permanent health cover and does not need to be renewed. You will receive a temporary health card and eventually you will receive a letter giving the name of the medical centre you are to visit in case of illness and a permanent card. Until the form has been registered at the social security office you are not covered for healthcare. Private health clinics will not accept this form as payment.

Form E106 –
The E106 is for people who have moved permanently to Spain but have not reached pensionable age, its period of effectiveness depends on the state of your past National Insurance contributions record. The period of medical cover commences from the date you leave the UK. You must however apply and receive your E106 entitlement form before leaving the UK to ensure you are covered and to know what that cover entitles you to.

Form E111 (EHIC) –
The best solution for someone wanting to stay in Spain for a short period of time without becoming a resident is the form E111, now replaced by the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), this card is issued by the National health Service in the UK, and you should carry it with you together with your passport at all times, in case of an emergency. This card is only to be used in cases of emergency and is not for the treatment of chronic illnesses.

Private Health Service –
If you aren’t covered by the Spanish social security, then it is imperative that you have private medical insurance. If you have private health insurance in the UK, then find out from the insurance company if they will pay your medical bills in Spain. There are a large number of private Spanish or English companies offering health insurance. The policies offered generally differ considerably in the extent of cover, limitations and restrictions, premiums, and choice of doctors, specialists and hospitals.

Health care points to remember when moving to Spain –

o Make sure you know where your nearest hospital is located.
o You need to go to the hospital registered in your district.
o If you are working in Spain then make sure you make social security payments in order to qualify for the Spanish National Health Service.
o Make sure you find a local gestor (official agent – a bit like a lawyer for menial bureaucracy) that can handle the social security paperwork for you.
o If you paying private healthcare insurance make sure you are aware of any limitations.
o Keep a list of useful telephone numbers of places to contact in case of emergencies.
o Try and learn some useful Spanish words, do not expect everyone to speak English.

Some Medical Tests Could Save Lives Of Texans

With the great advances in medical care in recent years, many of them related to early detection of disease, it makes more and more sense for residents of Dallas, Houston, Austin and throughout Texas to take advantage of what is available, Those who do so are more likely to live longer, some experts say.

History supports the idea with at least one example, the death rate associated with cervical cancer. Fifty years ago, cervical cancer was responsible for killing more women than any other form of cancer. When medical science developed the Pap test, which can identify cervical cancer before it starts, the death rate began going down; today cervical cancer is number 15 on the list of cancers that kill American women.

Not every test is perfect, say experts, and that goes for the Pap test. For every five women who have cancerous or precancerous cervical cells, at least one will have a test mistakenly reported as normal, according to the National Institutes of Health. Because this type of cancer develops slowly, a woman’s next test should be a better indicator, but a so-called “false negative” can result in a delay, which could be dangerous when it comes to diagnosis and treatment.

Another common test that can have lifesaving benefits for Texans is the colonoscopy, which is performed by a doctor inserting a flexible, lighted tube into the rectum and guiding it into the colon to look for and remove growths called polyps, the source of most colon cancers.

While the Centers for Disease Control reports a drop in deaths from colon cancer from more than 57,000 in 2000 to 53,580 in 2004, one problem identified by some researchers is that doctors who do the exam too quickly won’t see the full benefit of the screening.

In doing colonoscopies, experience is seen to be a factor. Some experts suggest asking the physician how many colonoscopies are done in a typical morning. Ten is a reasonable number, the experts say.

Another test known to be effective in saving lives is the screening for human papilloma virus. Commonly referred to as an HPV test, the procedure indentifies the virus responsible for most cases of cervical cancer. The HPV test is used with the Pap to screen women over the age of 30, and is used to assess whether they have been infected with any of the 13 HPV types that are linked to the cancer. The HPV test is also suggested for younger women if a Pap test shows there is a possible problem.

Testing for breast cancer includes having a mammogram, one of the more basic methods of screening. While mammograms have generated some controversy, the result of a Danish research study that said there was no good evidence behind its widespread use, both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute have since come out in favor of the test for women, starting at age 40.

For women 50 and older, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force reports that an annual mammogram cuts the risk of dying of breast cancer by at least 16%. The test does have its flaws, however, including the potential for it to indicate an abnormality when one isn’t really there. While the argument can be made against getting a false alarm, what is more worrisome are surveys showing that, in about 20% of cases where cancer is present, a mammogram doesn’t detect it.

Patients who remain concerned are sometimes encouraged to ask for a double-check of an x-ray. Another strategy is to ask the testing facility about its reading practices. Some experts say that x-rays should ideally be read by two radiologists or scanned by computer-assisted detection technologies which can improve the accuracy of the tests.

Some experts also suggest that women who are at higher risk have an MRI done each year, the idea being that higher detection rates typically come from the MRI versus a mammogram. In a study by Ellen Warner, MD, a medical oncologist at Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre in Ontario, the MRI found 77% of cancers, compared with 36% detected by mammography. At the same time, women at average risk are not encouraged to get an MRI because of a high false-positive rate — it often signals cancer when none is present.

Not all news on the cancer front is good news.

One standout point of concern is with melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer that has the distinction of being the only cancer that can be screened for that is on the increase, both in the number of new cases and in the death rate.

The American Cancer Society suggests getting a once-over for melanoma at every checkup. Because melanoma can occur in surprising spots that are difficult to examine yourself, like the eyes, gums, and genitals, experts say a full-body check is the best protection. Patients should take advantage of routine exams by asking their dentist, eye doctor, and gynecologist to look for pigmented lesions or other suspicious changes.

Early detection of cancer can be one of the more effective ways of remaining healthy.
